Bromhexine

Common use

Bromhexine tablet is primarily used to manage respiratory disorders associated with thick or excessive mucus. It belongs to the class of medicines known as mucolytics that work by thinning and loosening mucus in your respiratory tract. In addition to this, this tablet also helps you breathe more easily and aids in clearing mucus from your respiratory tract. Its expectorant action enables you to cough out phlegm with less difficulty, relieving symptoms such as coughing, breathlessness, stuffiness, and wheezing.

Dosage and direction

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. The tablet should be consumed with food. Do not take more than the recommended dose without consulting your doctor.

Precautions

Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, it's wise to use Bromhexine tablet with caution. Your doctor can provide the best advice before you start this medicine.
Breastfeeding: Bromhexine should be used with caution if you are breastfeeding. Consult your doctor to understand the potential risks and benefits.

Contraindications

Gastric Ulceration: If you have a history of gastric ulcers, taking this medicine could potentially aggravate your condition.
Bronchial Asthma: For those with a history of asthma, Bromhexine could potentially trigger bronchospasm due to increased liquefaction of sputum.
Allergy: If you know that you're allergic to bromhexine or any other ingredients in Bromhexine tablet, avoid using it. The tablets also contain sunset yellow FCF as a colour additive, which may cause allergic reactions.
Children: Bromhexine should not be given to children under 6 years of age except under medical advice. Caution is advised while giving this medicine to children.

Possible side effect

While taking Bromhexine, you may experience the following side effects: Nausea; Vomiting; Diarrhea; Abdominal pain; Headache; Dizziness; Dryness of mouth, nose, or throat.

Drug interaction

Antitussives: Medicines like codeine and dextromethorphan might be affected when taken with Bromhexine. Suppressing a cough can lead to mucus retention, which may not be ideal when using a medicine that thins and loosens mucus.
Antibiotics: If you're taking antibiotics such as amoxicillin or erythromycin, the efficacy of these medicines in treating respiratory tract infections could be enhanced due to increased penetration into bronchial secretions when used alongside Bromhexine.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosage schedule. Never increase your dosage without consulting your doctor.

Overdose

In case of an accidental overdose, you may experience common side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor.

Storage

Store Bromhexine tablet at room temperature. Keep the medicine in a dry place, safeguarded from light. Don't expose the tablet to excess moisture or heat. It's crucial to keep this medicine out of reach of children. Always use Bromhexine within its expiry date.
