Common use

Pulmicort Inhaler is primarily used for the long-term management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids. This medicine helps prevent symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath by controlling the inflammation in your lungs. It acts as a "preventer" medication rather than providing immediate relief during acute asthma attacks, meaning it works gradually to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms over time.

Dosage and direction

Follow these instructions while using Pulmicort Inhaler: Remove the protective cap from the mouthpiece before use. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Breathe out fully before placing the mouthpiece between your lips. Press down on the canister while taking a deep, steady breath in. Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Rinse your mouth with water after using the inhaler to prevent throat irritation. Clean the mouthpiece regularly with a dry cloth.

Contraindications

If you have a history of allergic reactions to budesonide or any components of the inhaler, you should not use Pulmicort Inhaler. Inform your doctor about any previous allergic reactions to medicines.
Pulmicort Inhaler is contraindicated in acute dyspnea or Status asthmaticus patients where intensive care measures are required.

Possible side effect

Pulmicort Inhaler may have the following common side effects: Throat irritation; Hoarseness; Cough; Headache; Oral thrush: Fungal infection that appears as white patches in your mouth and throat due to the medicine depositing in these areas; Adrenal suppression: Adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones.

Drug interaction

Antifungal medicines: Ketoconazole and itraconazole can increase budesonide levels in your blood, potentially raising the risk of side effects.
Antiviral medicines: Ritonavir and other HIV medicines may intensify the effects of budesonide, leading to increased corticosteroid side effects.

Missed dose

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Never double your dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Overdosing on Pulmicort Inhaler may cause throat irritation, hoarseness, headache, and an increased risk of oral thrush. If you experience any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor for advice.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Do not freeze the inhaler. Store out of reach of children and pets.
