Lamictal Dispersible

Common use

Lamictal (lamotrigine) is primarily used to manage epilepsy, helping to control different types of seizures in patients. It belongs to a class of medicines known as anticonvulsants. This medicine is also used for maintaining stability in bipolar I disorder, helping to delay the occurrence of mood episodes such as depression, mania, hypomania, and mixed episodes. It works by balancing certain chemicals in the brain that affect mood and electrical signals.

Dosage and direction

Follow these instructions while taking Lamictal Dispersible: Tablet should be dispersed in water immediately before use or chewed before swallowing. Take this medicine with or without food.

Precautions

Patients with liver or kidney disease should exercise caution while using Lamictal as it may require dosage adjustments. Patients with a history of depression or suicidal thoughts should also be monitored closely when taking this medication.
Skin Conditions: Patients with a history of skin reactions should use this medicine with caution, as lamotrigine can cause serious skin rashes.

Contraindications

Lamictal is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to lamotrigine or any of the components in its formulation. It is also contraindicated in patients suffering from Brugada syndrome, a rare heart rhythm disorder.
Lamictal falls under pregnancy category C. There is a potential risk of fetal harm based on animal studies. Lamotrigine is secreted into breast milk. Hence breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medicine.

Possible side effect

Lamictal may have the following common side effects: Dizziness; Headache; Nausea; Blurred vision; Double vision (when you see two images of a single object instead of one); Tremors.

Drug interaction

Anticonvulsants: Medicines like carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital can decrease lamotrigine levels in your body, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
Oral Contraceptives: Birth control pills, particularly those containing ethinyl oestradiol, may reduce lamotrigine levels, possibly making it less effective in controlling seizures or mood episodes.
Enzyme Inducers: Medicines like primidone and rifampicin can lower lamotrigine concentration in your bloodstream.

Missed dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Overdosing on Lamictal may cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, and unsteady movements. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor or visit the nearest hospital for proper guidance.

Storage

Store at room temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep the medicine protected from light and moisture. Store in the original packaging until ready for use. Keep all medicines out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package.
