Zovirax Cream

Common use

Zovirax Cream helps manage infections, such as cold sores and genital herpes, caused by viruses. This medication does not kill the virus and it may still be possible to spread the virus to others. This medication will not treat colds, the flu, or infections caused by bacteria.

Dosage and direction

This medication is only for external use on the skin. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. Use a finger cot or rubber gloves so that you do not spread the infection to another site. Apply a thin layer to cover all lesions. Do not get this medication in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water. Use this medication at regular intervals. Do not use more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your care team even if you think you are better. Do not stop using except on your care team's advice.

Precautions

Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people. Do not touch your eyes after touching an infected area. Do not use without doctor's permission if your medical history include: kidney disease or liver disease. Zovirax Cream should not be used during pregnancy, becoming pregnant or lactating without doctor's advice. Do not use Zovirax Cream before breast-feeding without doctor's advice.

Contraindications

Zovirax Cream is not allowed in patients with kidney disorders. Also Zovirax Cream is contraindicated in people with: Large areas of burned or damaged skin; An unusual or allergic reaction to acyclovir, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives; Pregnant or trying to get pregnant; Breast-feeding.

Possible side effect

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible: Allergic reactions - skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome): Burning, itching, crusting, or peeling of treated skin.

Drug interaction

Zovirax Cream interact with: probenecid (Benemid), Tizanidine, Varicella Virus Vaccine, Fosphenytoin, Phenytoin, Valproic Acid. Also note that interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. As usual it affects the the effect of drugs, so consult with your doctor about how it interactions are being managed or should be managed.

Missed dose

If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Take your usually dose next day in the same regularly time.

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Storage

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees C (59 and 77 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Get rid of any unused medication after the expiration date.
